Pre-Tour Arrival - SCOTTSDALE/PHOENIX

Hotel and Evening on own.
Day 1– March 29,
May 9 - SCOTTSDALE/PHOENIX/ROUTE 66/PEACH SPRINGS
Early Departure from your pre-tour
Phoenix hotel via Mini-motorcoach/Van - Phoenix to Peach Springs.
Here you will meet your hosts and
guides who will transfer you north through the Sonoran desert toward
Flagstaff and Historic Route 66. We'll stop for lunch
where you will have an opportunity to select from many (fast food)
restaurants and have an opportunity to stretch your legs. We then
head toward Route 66 and travel along this historic highway to Peach
Springs (Approx. a 6 1/2 hour drive). We'll settle into a nearby
hotel and enjoy a hearty "Welcome Dinner." We'll return
to the hotel, answer any questions and prepare our packed items
for transport to Supai Lodge by packhorse or mule the next morning.
Accommodations Peach
Springs (TS, W)
Day 2 – March 30,
May 10 - GRAND CANYON -- HIKE DAY -- SUPAI VILLAGE
After
breakfast, our early morning departure begins with a drive to
Hualapi Hilltop and the trail head (approx. 5200' of elevation).
Here we drop off our gear (travel luggage), it will travel
to Supai Lodge by horseback. We will only carry our day hike packs
with water, snacks, trail lunch and personal items. Our 8 mile
hike down 2200' into The Canyon will take most of the rest of
the morning. Our destination is Supai Village, home of The Havasupai
Tribe - People of the Baaja, "Blue-Green Waters." The
Lodge will be our home for the next 3 nights. This evening, we'll
host a cookout next to the lodge. We may do an optional eveing
hike, depending upon our legs. (TS, B, L, D)
Accommodations - Supai Lodge
Day 3 – March 31, May 11 - GRAND
CANYON -- HIKE DAY -- CANYON WATERFALLS HIKE DAY*
After breakfast, we'll pack lunches
and hit the trail. Havasu Creek is one of the biggest and certainly
the most stunning tributary in the Canyon. We'll explore
downstream past the waterfalls for about 5 miles downstream. There
are remarkable rock formations which we'll get to see close up,
and multiple stream crossings during our abitious 10-mile roundtrip
adventure. Of course, in Walking Connection tradition, there will
be alternatives for those who choose not to do this entire hike.
In either case, you will see why many refer to Havasu Creek as
a small piece of heaven inside The Grand Canyon. Tonight, dinner
at the very informal Lodge Cafe.(B, TS, L)
Accommodations - Supai Lodge
Day 4 – April 1, May 12 - GRAND
CANYON -- HIKE DAY -- CARBONATE CANYON
Today's hike to Carbonate Canyon
is an easier day. We'll explore its "narrows"
perhaps from atop the Redwall Limestone. Tonight, a dinner at
the very informal Lodge Cafe. (B, TS, L)
Accommodations - Supai Lodge
Day 5 – April 2, May 13 - GRAND
CANYON -- HIKE DAY -- HIKING OUT OF GRAND CANYON - HOME!
After an early (cold) breakfast, we
begin our hike to the Rim and out of Havasupai. This
8-mile journey is a fairly advanced hike. The one and half miles
of switchbacks near the rim can be especially challenging. We
plan on arriving at the top around 2:00pm. For those who choose
not to hike out, for a modest price, optional horseback or helicopter
transfers to the rim are possible on a space available basis.
Advanced reservations are recommended, but same day transfers
are possible. We'll stop at a "60's" Diner in Seligman
on Route 66 for an old fashion road dinner (on your own).. From
there we will make our way back to Phoenix. Our anticipated arrival
time is estimated at 8:00pm where we will drop people at our original
departure point or at Sky Harbor International Airport. (B,
TS, L).
(Options of distance and turnaround
points will be offered according to group’s abilities.)
Meal Ledgend: (W) Water, (B)
Breakfast, (TS) Travel or Trail Snacks, (L) Lunch, (D) Dinner
*PLEASE NOTE - On
August 16, 2008 a devastating flash flood went through Supai
Canyon. It signifcantly altered parts of the Reservation, creek
and waterfalls. The Supai people are working to restore all
and have reassured us that the Reservation, trails and waterfalls
will be open by the time of our adventure in Spring of 2009.
